Creative Industries Sector

The creative industries are the fastest growing sector of the UK’s economy. In economic terms they already outperform traditional sectors such as agriculture and car manufacturing.

Creative industries are those industries which have their origin in individual creativity, skill and talent and which have a potential for wealth and job creation through the generation and exploitation of intellectual property. This includes advertising, architecture, the art and antiques market, crafts, design, designer fashion, film and video, interactive leisure software, music, the performing arts, publishing, software and computer games, television and radio. In addition the cultural, cultural heritage, entertainment, museum and tourism industries are identified as being closely related to the creative industries.

Useful Links:

Creative Industries Network (CIN) (external link) was formed in 2001 by a group of creative professionals who recognised the lack of networking opportunities for like minded creative individuals. CIN has since grown into a fully fledged networking organisation with regular events, a full time network co-ordinator and dedicated website - a fully developed information portal and online database of our creative members. CIN is now embedded in the creative sector in Derbyshire, with close links to local government and support organisations.

Culture East Midlands (external link) was established by Government in 1999, as one of eight Regional Cultural Consortia. Funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), its role is to promote the value and importance of culture in the region. It does this by bringing together the organisations which have a role in the region’s cultural life. With these partners, it raises the profile and value of culture in the East Midlands.

Derbyshire County Council (external link) works with partners to provide advice and support programmes for new and existing creative industries in Derbyshire. This includes businesses in: advertising, architecture, the arts, crafts, design, film, video, interactive software, music, the performing arts and publishing. They are able to help with training in business skills development and support business networking. They are also working with partners to develop workspace accommodation.

Rural Culture East Midlands (external link) is a service providing information about cultural projects and organisations in rural parts of the East Midlands. The purpose of the site is to support the work of people developing cultural activity in rural areas, and showcase projects from across the region. The site provide information on training and funding opportunities, news and events, detailed case studies and signposts organisations that support cultural activity. Isolation is a common aspect of rural life and this site aims to overcome some of those communication barriers by providing an appropriate and accessible service to those working in culture in the rural East Midlands.
