South Derbyshire has a significant construction sector, with over 300 companies ranging from the domestic scale to those involved in major civil engineering projects.

The sector is presently very healthy with good prospects for the future. It has benefited from growing demand for housing and recent investment in public infrastructure projects and facilities such as schools and hospitals. South Derbyshire also benefits from the proximity of raw materials, such as aggregates extracted from the Trent valley.

Businesses include a number of large supply chain companies manufacturing and distributing construction products, such as Bison Concrete Products, and others that are recognised as innovators in their fields such as Framing Solutions and Roger Bullivant.

The East Midlands is currently experiencing the fastest and largest growth in construction projects outside Greater London and has serious construction trade skills shortages, presenting a real need for increased and improved training for skilled craftspeople.

East Midlands Construction CoVE (EMCON) (external link) aims to improve construction skills training and tackle acute skills shortages in the region. Officially launched in October 2004, EMCON is a sub-regional partnership of four colleges – New College Nottingham (ncn), Derby College, South East Derbyshire College, and West Nottinghamshire College – and the Learning Skills Councils for Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. EMCON aims to develop and share its excellence in the delivery of innovative programmes focused on gas, plumbing and electrical provision to meet the needs of employers in the region.

ConstructionSkills (external link) - ConstructionSkills is the Sector Skills Council for construction. It represents every part of the construction industry, from architects to bricklayers, in every part of the UK. It also covers every part of the skills agenda - from grants to college places.
