Promoting equal opportunities
Our vision is to make South Derbyshire a healthier, more prosperous and safer place to live.
We recognise that an essential part of that aim is to ensure fair and equal access to our services and employment opportunities. We intend to promote equality and diversity for all regardless of such considerations as gender, race, ethnic or national origin, disability, family status, age, religious belief, class or sexuality.
We are committed to achieving Level 2 of the Equalities Standard for Local Government in the medium term and in the long-term, progress to Level 5.
Race Equality
As a public authority, we are bound by the 'general duty' to promote race equality as set out in the Race Relations Act.
The general duty requires us to: -
- Eliminate unlawful racial discrimination,
- Promote equality of opportunity, and
- Promote good relations between people of different racial groups.
We produced a Race Equality Scheme in 2003 to meet the requirements and this is supported by action plans produced each year.
Disabilities Equality
Our Disabilities Equality Scheme sets out how we will promote equality of opportunity for disabled people. We have developed it in consultation with disabled people and other stakeholders.
Gender Equality
Our Gender Equality Scheme sets out how we will promote equality of opportunity between men and women and eliminate unlawful discrimination and harassment. We have prepared and developed it through wide consultation with stakeholders.
The Corporate Equality and Fairness Scheme
The document combines the three existing schemes we have for race, disability and gender equality. It also includes age, sexual orientation as well as religion and belief. It sets out how we plan to meet our responsibilities in these areas over the next three years. The formal consultation on this document has now closed, but we still welcome your comments. Please use the contact details at the bottom of this page.
