Environmental Education Project

Environmental EducationBased at Rosliston Forestry Centre, we have been organising a range of public events, environmental courses and school visits across the district since 1994.

These include Apple Day and Halloween events, other family fun activities like pond-dipping, plus science, geography, history, literacy, citizenship, art and craft sessions for schools.

Our aim is to provide opportunities for people to learn about the environment whilst having fun!

We offer:

  • Public events (Rosliston and Swadlincote)
  • Wildlife Watch Club (run with Derbyshire Wildlife Trust) for kids in the holidays.
  • Educational visits at Rosliston, Sharpe's Pottery and other sites
  • An Outreach Service to local schools (within half an hour's drive) – including all South Derbyshire schools. This includes activity ideas and advice, eg on Risk Assessment.
  • Activities for most curriculum subjects, linking to Dfee Schemes where possible. We also provide links to Healthy School Standard, ESD, Citizenship and Eco-schools by request.
  • Loans materials for schools, including Swadlincote Town Centre maps and photographs for local studies.
  • Self-guided trail leaflets for Rosliston Forestry Centre and Swadlincote Town Centre.

Advice is free, but we charge (to cover costs only) for school visits and some events.

WeevilMinibeast Mysteries Revealed

Did you know? Weevils squeak to communicate with each other. Click Beetles will play dead when disturbed. Common Froghopper nymphs make clusters of spit to live in. These, and many other fascinating facts, will be revealed in a new book produced by South Derbyshire District Council's Environmental Education Project.
