If you have a problem with bees then there is nothing we can do unless they are swarming and causing a danger to the public. Bees are protected, as they are pollinators. For further help or information you should contact an independent company and/or a local beekeeper.
Honey Bees
(This is the only type of bee that will swarm)
Honey Bees are not pests and we, as an authority will not normally treat them with insecticide. If a mass of bees (a swarm) is found in a garden these will be domesticated Honey Bees, this is identified as no other bees or wasps swarm. It is advised to inform the local beekeeper or enthusiast as they might be of value to them. The council will only consider treatment to swarms if they are inaccessible to a beekpeer or a potential nuisance or danger to the public.
Wild Bees
(These include the Bumble Bee and Solitary Bees)
These creatures are harmless unless severely provoked, and are of great benefit to agriculture. Unfortunately they are becoming increasingly rare and as pollinators they are in great need. The council will not kill these creatures and the public are asked to leave them alone.
Mortar and Masonry Bees
(They nest in soft sandstone type rock faces and will sometimes find areas of soft mortar in brick)
These Bees are harmless. Small numbers do little damage but over a number of years can cause a considerable amount of mortar to wear away. Apply insecticide to the affected area then re-point the affected walls with a strong mortar to make them less attractive to the bees.
What do we treat for and is there a charge?
