Conservation Grants

 Swadlincote Conservation Area Grant Scheme

63 High Street Swadlincote before and after restoration
63 High Street 'before' and 'after' repairs and the restoration of the historic frontage

Partnership Schemes in Conservation Areas are designed to promote conservation-led regeneration. Under the Partnership Scheme for the Swadlincote Conservation Area, English Heritage, South Derbyshire District and Derbyshire County Council will jointly fund grants of up to 80% for authentic restoration and repair for historic buildings thus continuing the work of the Swadlincote Heritage Economic Regeneration Scheme (HERS). All the commercial historic buildings and some residential historic buildings in the Swadlincote Conservation Area are included.

Swadlincote  has a fascinating industrial history. Its major period of growth happened in the nineteenth century when the mining and pottery industries flourished. Though the local industries have all but disappeared the associated nineteenth century buildings survive to give Swadlincote the special character it has today. Sadly many of these have been neglected or badly treated in the more recent past. Some have already been transformed with grant assistance under the previous HERS scheme. It is hoped that the current grants will continue to result in such high quality restoration of disfigured buildings and the proper care of those that remain undamaged.
