Recycling

Startling Facts

  • Each year your family will use 6 trees worth of paper
  • It takes 1 million years for a glass bottle to breakdown in a landfill site
  • Each year we throw away 80 million drinks cans and food tins
  • 20% of the food bought in a supermarket is thrown away uneaten - that's £424 for an average family in a year
  • In one week the UK produces enough waste to fill Pride Park stadium twice over
  • South Derbyshire residents throw away one tonne of rubbish per household every year the same weight as a family car)

With over 38,000 households in the District we have a BIG waste problem and we NEED YOUR HELP !

Together we have recycled or composted 36% of our household waste. Our plans to extend composting to all households and improve our recycling collection service, should improve this further next year and the following, so that by 2010 we should reach 40%. We still need to work hard to meet future recycling targets particularly as the amount of rubbish produced grows every year.

The solution to the waste problem is at hand - the wheelie bin isn't the only option for rubbish.

South Derbyshire offers many recycling centres, a kerbside recycling service, a composting collection scheme and a home composter discount scheme. Schools and voluntary groups can raise funds from recycling with our Cash for Trash scheme.

Please help us by completing our questionnaire about the in-vessel (Garden and Food Waste) composting scheme:
