What is Fly Tipping?
Fly tipping is when rubbish is dumped, often left at the side of roads and in lay-bys. We are obliged to clear up any rubbish dumped on public land. Any kinds of rubbish may be dumped – sometimes it is household rubbish in black bags, sometimes tyres, tree cuttings or industrial rubbish.
Why is it a problem?
No one wants to see lots of rubbish.
- It looks really ugly and makes the area look neglected.
- Some types of rubbish can attract vermin.
- Some types of rubbish can cause pollution of local land and streams.
- It is expensive to clear up.
- It means that we have to spend money cleaning up rubbish, which could be spent on other things.
- Unscrupulous businesses are charging people money to clear up their rubbish and then dumping it. People can be paying twice to clean up their rubbish.
What can I do?
Take responsibility for your rubbish and make sure it is dealt with properly.
Report any fly tipping you see using the form below, use our FREE hotline number 0800 587 2349 or use our special CleanTeam e-mail address waste.cleansing@south-derbys.gov.uk
Don't employ people to take away rubbish unless you are sure they are legitimate businesses. All proper businesses collecting waste should have a Waste Carriers Licence. To see if a waste carrier is licensed, you can either phone 0708 506 506 or check online at public register page of the Environment Agency's website
Let people know you don’t want to be paying for their rubbish. Encourage them to do the right thing.
