When you are allocated a property you enter into a legal contract with the Council - this is called the Tenancy Agreement.
If you are offered a property:
- Checks will be made to ensure that your circumstances haven't changed since you applied to join the Housing Register (e.g. that no rent or other debt is owed).
- You will be given an opportunity to view your potential new home on a Thursday or a Friday and have until Monday at 12:00 noon to confirm your decision to take it.
- If you decide not to accept it, we will discuss your reasons and you may be offered another property as it becomes available. You will only be made a reasonable number of offers before other applicants are seen to have a more pressing need.
- You are expected to occupy your house as your main and permanent home. If you need to go away from your home for a long period (for instance, more than 2 weeks) please let us know. If you are not living at your home and you have not informed us the Council may begin legal action to evict you.
What to do if you are offered a property:
- Make your decision as soon as possible after you have seen the property as is reasonable and let us know if you want it by 12.00 noon on Monday.
- Occupy your new home as soon as practical after you have confirmed your intention to take it. Failure to do so could result in legal action to recover the property.
