If you are reading this page it is probably because you are homeless or know someone who is in danger of becoming homeless. Perhaps they or you are in the process of making a homeless declaration. We understand that this can be a very distressing time for you and your family, and realise that it is often difficult to take in advice given to you by the various agencies and Housing Staff.

This section talks you through preventing homelessness and where you can turn for help if you find yourself to be homeless. We will then explain what happens if you make a homeless application, how it will be dealt with and what guidelines are used to decide whether or not South Derbyshire District Council has a duty to secure suitable housing for you. Even if the Council does not have a duty to house you we will offer advice and support to try to help at this difficult time.

What to do if you become homeless?

If you think you may lose your home you should seek advice about your rights at an early stage. Please read the rest of the information in this section and contact the Council for an appointment with the Homelessness Officer. You could also ask for help from places such as the Citizens Advice Bureau or Derbyshire Housing Aid (external links).

When homeless applications are assessed all Councils have to follow the guidelines in the Housing Act 1996 and Homelessness Act 2002.
