Background

Eureka Park is a traditional open park developed from a simple recreation ground during the 1920's and early 1930's. Named after a coal seam which runs beneath the park and the former colliery on the western side of the site, Eureka Park provides a green oasis close to the centre of Swadlincote and is used daily by many people, from dog walkers to school children, from sports clubs to walking groups.

The original intention was to develop Memorial gardens on the site of the former colliery to commemorate WW1. Memorial gates were commissioned to commemorate lives lost during the two World Wars. The WW1 gates, erected in 1926, remain intact whilst the WW2 gates, erected in 1949 have been partially demolished.

From humble beginnings as a small recreation ground with some play equipment, the park gradually developed to provide various sports and recreation facilities for Swadlincote. In 1933 a paddling pool was constructed, fed by a concrete cascade, and remained a popular attraction until it’s closure in the 1970's.

The facilities in the park today include a well-equipped children's play area, bowling green, crazy golf course and tennis courts all in a parkland setting surrounded by almost 300 mature trees.

Since 2001, the Friends of Eureka Park have worked hard to carry out improvements such as new benches, picnic tables and planting areas. A book has also been created which documents the life of the park from its beginnings in the 1920's until the present day.
