Housing Allocations - General Information
People over 18 years may apply for council accommodation. However, people between 16 and 18 years may also be considered. We will normally ask that they have the agreement of a responsible adult or agency to act as a guarantor.
Re-housing through the council is by priority need and in practice, housing applications are given points based upon their current circumstances. The more obvious your need for rehousing, the higher the number of points that are awarded to you.
For example, by law, we are required to give "reasonable preference", or priority, when considering applications from people in certain situations. For further information see Housing Allocation Points
Who Can Apply?
Our main responsibility is towards applicants who currently live or work in the area. If you live in the area, you will normally be offered accommodation before those who do not. Your application can also be considered if you work in the area, used to live in the area, or if you have close relatives who currently live here. If you do not have any connection with this area, you may still register but it is not likely that an offer of housing can be made to you.
You may, however, be able to move to this area through the Mutual Exchange Scheme.
Owner-occupiers
Owner-occupiers who wish to put their name on the housing register can do so but are advised to state very clearly why they feel they need Council housing. If you own your home you are only likely to be offered housing if you are faced with severe financial or medical difficulties, and cannot resolve your housing problem in any other way.
How is my Application Considered?
When a vacancy arises of the type you need and perhaps in an area that you have specified, the housing register is checked. The cases with the highest number of points including transfer cases (people who wish to move from one Council property to another) are then closely considered. We identify the most needy case or cases using the points as a clear guide. We are committed to ensuring that applicants from all categories on the register (New applicants, Transfer applicants, Homeless applicants and HOMES applicants) are considered, and it therefore has a ration of lettings from each group.
We will then consider other factors such as the ages of any children and the likelihood of another more suitable vacancy arising. We will recommend an allocation and this will be recorded and checked by a Senior member of staff and the allocation will then be made. The successful person will be offered the property in writing.
There is a list at the bottom of this page which shows the total number of houses we have in each area.
