Petitions

Our petitions process allows members of the public and our local communities to raise issues that are important to them and help to improve services.

What is a petition?

A petition is any communication, which is signed by, or sent to the Council by a minimum of five signatures from five different households

The petition must have a clear message or instruction asking the Council to take action.

We recommend that you read our protocol (pdf, 255kb) if you are considering submitting a petition.

What information should be included?

We ask that any petition contains the following information:

  • Subject of the petition
  • Area to which it relates
  • Action the petitioners want the Council to take
  • Contact details of the petition's organiser
  • Name, address, postcode and signature of each supporter
  • Date the petition is submitted

What happens when a petition is submitted?

All petitions sent or presented to the Council will receive an acknowledgement within seven working days of receipt. This acknowledgement will set out what we plan to do with the petition.

Petitions can also be presented to an appropriate meeting of the Council. These meetings take place on a six weekly basis. Dates and times can be found in our planner.

If your petition has received 1,000 signatures or more it will also be scheduled for a Full Council debate.
