South Derbyshire has a history of attracting major international companies. Nestlé established itself in Hatton in 1900 and is one of only two factories in the country which produces the Nestlé range of coffees.
Toyota chose South Derbyshire for its British assembly plant where a quarter of a million Auris and Avensis models are now produced each year - 80 per cent of the vehicles are exported to Europe, and even Japan.
JCB has recently spent £72m constructing its diesel engine factory in the district while new facilities have recently been constructed for Futaba and Bison bringing hundreds of new jobs to South Derbyshire.
The area has easy access to the motorway network. South Derbyshire is close to the M1 which provides a north-south artery for the east of England.
It is one of the few areas which offers an east-west route across the country – the A50 links the M1 with the M6, which is the north-south artery for the west of the country. Swadlincote is less than ten miles from the M42 which provides a fast link to Birmingham, Britain’s second city.
Those organisations operating in a global marketplace have East Midlands Airport on the doorstep and Birmingham International Airport off the M42.
Large and small companies across all sectors have found the workforce flexible and multi-skilled. The diversity of the local economy means that there is no dominating skill and companies can find willing and able employees for all aspects of their operations.
The area’s excellent road links enable access to a substantial workforce anywhere in the District. Assistance with recruitment and training is available from the district council’s partner organisations, such as the East Midlands Learning and Skills Council . At the George Holmes Business Centre in Swadlincote, Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce and Business Link East Midlands provide a single gateway to a range of business support and advice.
We actively assist businesses investing in the area and can co-ordinate further services from partner organisations. At every stage of the process, tailored assistance is available, from property searches and the provision of economic information through to tours and on-going aftercare. The menu on the left can be used to find further details of business parks in the district, council-owned business units that are available to let and vacant commercial properties.
In certain circumstances, assistance is available from the East Midlands Development Agency to businesses which need financial help to invest in land or buildings or plant or machinery in order to expand and modernise.
