Advertising is an effective way of communicating to a large number of people in your community. When you are preparing your ad or flyer, think carefully about what you want it to say.
Target audience Does your advert/flyer speak directly and clearly to the people you want to reach?
Focus Does it offer a single, direct idea?
Visibility Will your ad stand out on a page or a screen?
Branding Is it different from your competitors? Does it stand out from the crowd of other information?
Layout Is the layout straightforward and easy to read? Does the headline draw the reader into the copy? Does the copy stop the reader from moving on?
Give the date, time, location and contact number plus any other vital information.
Think of where you would like your press release to appear. Write it for those readers. Your release will need to be approved by the leaders of your organisation as it represents the group as a whole.
The website www.newspapersoc.org lists all major regional publications and is a good place to start. People in your organisation may already have useful contacts with key journalists in your area. Its worth asking if any of your members know local journalist as its always easier if the reporter you are speaking to already knows about your organisation.
