The Cleaner South Derbyshire Campaign

Put the shine into your community. We are inviting groups and individuals to get involved.

Findern Footpaths Group at their litter pick Did you know:
  • It costs taxpayers more than half a billion pounds to clear the streets of England, and that doesn't include parks and public spaces.
  • The amount of litter dropped yearly in the UK has increased by 500% since the 1960s.
  • MPs get more letters complaining about litter and dog fouling than anything else.
  • The rat population has boomed to 60 million due to the huge amounts of litter around.
  • This means there are almost as many rats as people in the UK.
  • Over 69,000 animals were killed or injured by litter last year in Britain.

Here at South Derbyshire, we're doing better than most Councils in keeping litter under control. But we are not being complacent.  We want to do even better to make South Derbyshire a better place to live, work and visit.

Your Council is running a Cleaner South Derbyshire Campaign.

We are starting with a Spring Clean and we are inviting groups and individuals to get involved.

Launch event at Coppice Side, Swadlincote, and introduction from Council Leader Councillor Heather Wheeler

Blitz Kits

We have litter-picking Blitz Kits of litter pickers, high visibility vest, gloves and sacks so that you can collect rubbish from your community.

We can have your bags of rubbish collected.

It is open to everyone

  • Schools are invited to get involved.
  • Businesses are getting busy in bagging up rubbish.
  • Community groups can start grabbing litter.
  • People in parishes can join together to pick up.
  • You could do it on your own.
  • And you can encourage other folks not to drop rubbish.

Risk assessment

Legally, you need to carry out a risk assessment and ensure your team are aware of any significant findings. To make this easier for you, we have prepared a generic template for Litter Picking, which you can download and amend as necessary. You should tailor the content to make sure that all hazards specific to your own team’s activities have been identified and relevant controls put in place.

We are all proud of South Derbyshire.  Let’s make it an even better place to live, work and visit.
