Overpayments - Council Tax benefit

If we give you too much council tax benefit, we call it an overpayment. In most cases we will send you a revised council tax bill.

When we award council tax benefit, we generally credit the benefit onto your council tax account through to the end of the current financial year. This means that if your circumstances change, even if we are told on time, you may still have an overpayment through to the end of the financial year.

When we give you too much benefit, we call the overpayment 'excess benefit'. If this happens, we will send you a letter, which will tell you:

  • why we gave you too much benefit
  • how much the overpayment is
  • if you have to pay back the amount
  • how you can appeal if you think this is wrong

In most cases we will send you a revised council tax bill, and you will usually have to pay more council tax.

You can minimise the impact of any overpayment by reporting changes of circumstances to us at the correct time.
