New disabled changing room at the Green Bank

7 February 2012

A former storage area at a South Derbyshire sporting complex has been transformed into a modern disabled changing room.

The renovation has taken place close to the poolside at the Green Bank Leisure Centre in Swadlincote to offer a comfortable and convenient environment.

South Derbyshire District Council secured a total of £8,808.43 from Derbyshire County Council’s Aiming High programme to carry out the works.

New facilities, put in place in partnership with sport and exercise charity Active Nation, include a hoist, shower, toilet and a fold out changing bed.

Cllr John Lemmon, Chairman of Housing and Community Services at the District Council, said: “This is an excellent addition to the Green Bank Leisure Centre.

“We want to help all our residents to live as independently as possible and provide the right environment to meet their needs. The work done will further encourage active and healthy lifestyles while enhancing the wide range of facilities available.”

Members of Enrych, a charity offering leisure opportunities to adults with a physical disability, regularly use the pool.

Co-ordinator Karen Whitehead said: “These modern facilities at the Green Bank offer space and comfort to those with disabilities. Our members have been pleased with what they have seen and the feedback has been very good.”

The changing room can be accessed by a radar key, which also offers disabled people entry to thousands of public toilets around the country.

Angie Archer, Chairman of the South Derbyshire Parent Forum and SHOUT, a parent and family support group for children with disabilities and special needs, said: “The changing room is providing an environment where children with disabilities can come and be involved in mainstream activities within the leisure centre.

“It is great that parents, carers and children can use it. It has all of the amenities needed, including a radar key, to promote independent living.”
