Flipping fantastic fun promised at pancake races

24 January 2012

An unusual visitor has been spotted in Swadlincote surveying the scene of the town’s forthcoming charity pancake races.

Nottingham Rugby Club’s Archie the Stag sized up the Delph after becoming the first mascot out of the starting blocks to sign up to the extravaganza in aid of Sport Relief.

He is now laying down the gauntlet for others to join him for some flipping fantastic fun from noon on Tuesday, February 21.

Last year saw Rammie from Derby County, Billy and Betty Brewer from Burton Albion and Elvis Gresley from Gresley FC, among others, give blood, sweat and more than a few tears for the cause.

Now Archie, carrying out a promotional tour of the East Midlands as Nottingham make a push for Premiership rugby, is hoping to upstage them all.

His adviser Steve Smith, the club’s Community Development Manager, said: “The Mascot Pancake Races are an excellent opportunity to showcase professional sport clubs such as ours and we are out to win it this year.

“Archie has been training hard and sticking to his special diet of grass, heather, leaves and twigs. We believe he is the one to beat at this year’s event and would challenge others to come and take him on.”

Following the mascot race there is to be a series of team relay races open to all comers, including companies, charities and sports clubs. Teams of four will be timed as they make their way through a specially constructed course.

As well as medals and trophies for winning teams there will be a special award for fancy dressers that best capture the spirit of the Olympics.

Cllr Bob Wheeler, Leader of South Derbyshire District Council, said: “We are delighted to be bringing back the Swadlincote Pancake Races following the success of last year’s event, when more than 30 teams took part and almost £450 was raised.

“The day promises to be a lot of fun and we hope the whole community will get involved to have a good time, raise money for a worthy cause and promote Swadlincote’s businesses and organisations.”

Application forms and details about the races are available from Swadlincote Tourist Information Centre, in West Street, on 01283 222848.

Entry forms are also available at www.south-derbys.gov.uk.
