The District Council’s Safer Neighbourhood Wardens and Crowfoot Kennels in Church Broughton were kept busy in 2011 collecting and caring for a record amount of stray dogs.
A total of 188 cuddly canines – double the number recorded in 2005 - were picked up.
Microchipped mutts are returned to their masters for free. If owners cannot be immediately identified the dog will stay at the kennels, in Hay Lane, before every effort is made to reunite them or find a loving new home.
Since the start of the year a further 10 strays have been collected, including a Fell Terrier found in Midway and a Cairn Cross discovered in Thorpe Downs Road, Church Gresley.
Council Environmental Health Manager Matt Holford said: “Dogs may become stray for a variety of reasons. It is important we act promptly to re-unite them with their owners while looking after their welfare needs.
"Our advice to owners is to ensure their dog is microchipped. The cost of this simple procedure, which can be carried out at most local vets, is significantly less than the bill for reclaiming their pet from the kennels.
“We would also encourage animal lovers to keep an eye on our website, www.south-derbys.gov.uk, or follow us on Twitter, for details of dogs looking for a new home.”
Aspiring dog owners can also keep up to date with the availability of potential new pets on Crowfoot Kennel’s recently launched Facebook page.
Owner Karen Gregory said: “The page has improved the response we have had to helping rehome the strays that have been brought in to us.
“We immediately post photos and details of any new arrivals and would encourage anyone wanting a new pet to join us on Facebook.”
