Remembering the victims of the Holocaust

24 January 2013

A commemorative gesture is to be made at a popular tourist attraction to remember the victims of the Holocaust.

Cllr Michael Stanton, chairman of South Derbyshire District Council, will dedicate a group of Sitka Spruce trees to those around the world that have lost their lives as a result of acts of genocide.

A small ceremony will be held to mark the occasion from 10.30am on Holocaust Memorial Day (Fri, Jan 27) at Rosliston Forestry Centre.

Cllr Stanton said: “Holocaust Memorial Day provides an opportunity to learn from the Holocaust and more recent genocides, while promoting democracy and societies which respect and celebrate diversity.

“This year’s theme of Speak Up, Speak Out encourages us all to play our part in stamping out prejudice, hatred and fear.

“It is important that we take time to remember the events of the past that have shaped our society today and pay our respects to those who have suffered at the hands of others."
