More information about inviting the chairman to your event, and the precedence that should be observed.
Invite the Chairman to your event
During his year in office, the Chairman wishes to attend as many local events as possible. If you would like the Chairman to take part in your event, perhaps by opening it, making a speech or drawing a raffle, please contact the Chairman's Office for further information using the contact details at the bottom of this page.
Invitations are considered on a strictly first come, first served basis.
Charity supported by the Chairman of South Derbyshire
The Chairman will be supporting the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance as his charity.
Chairman's precedence
The following information is given for the assistance of organisers of functions to be attended by the Chairman and/or Chairman's Consort.
- Except when Royalty or the Lord Lieutenant/Deputy Lord Lieutenant is present, the Chairman as the First Citizen in the District, should be given due precedence at all proceedings and functions within his own District - see Local Government Act 1972, Section 3(4).
- The Chairman will always be considerate of the host's requirement, but generally, except in cases where the Chairman is asked to take part in the Reception, his time of arrival should be only five minutes before the function begins.
- A responsible person should meet the Chairman on arrival at the entrance - address him as Mr Chairman - and should introduce him to the host or the assembled company.
- When the Chairman enters on more formal occasions, those present should rise and this should be repeated when he leaves.
- Unless the Chairman occupies the chair, he should be seated on the immediate right of the person presiding (assuming Royalty or the Lord Lieutenant are not present). The Chairman's Consort should be seated on the immediate right of the Chairman.
- If the Chairman is to speak, his toast or reply should appear early on the toast list and any background information should be sent to the Chairman's Office in advance.
- The formal announcement of the Chairman is "The Chairman of South Derbyshire District Council, Councillor Michael Stanton".
- The Chairman will normally be accompanied by a Chauffeur Attendant and the Chairman's Office should be advised in advance of parking facilities.
