Environmental management (EMAS)

We have recently been accredited to two international flagship standards, the British Standard ISO14001 and the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS).

We set out our aims in our Corporate Plan, in which we make a commitment to providing a "Cleaner, Greener" environment.

The EMAS scheme recognises organisations that go beyond the minimum legal requirements and put in place systems which ensure their activities have a reduced impact on the environment, including recycling, waste minimisation and energy saving schemes.

The implementation of EMAS will bring real benefits, some of which will include:

  • Identification of our many impacts on the environment.
  • Reduction of negative impacts and maximising the positive effects of our activities.
  • Ensure all Environmental Laws and regulations are identified and complied with.
  • Financial savings, through materials, waste, energy and water reductions and avoiding the costs of fines, and effective management of our activities.
  • Independent verification of environmental performance and annual reporting to ensure the public know how well we are doing.
  • Commitment to long-term process of year on year environmental improvements.

All activities will be scrutinised with the following major areas being targeted:

  • Energy and water consumption
  • Waste management and minimisation
  • Transport and car mileage
  • Pollution prevention by correct materials handling and storage
  • Procurement of goods and services

This is a significant, externally verified award, which requires the highest standards of management and measurable improvements.  There are now 16 Public bodies in the United Kingdom accredited to the EMAS standard of which, we are one.
