Climate Week

Climate Week is a national initiative each year in March which gives everyone the chance to focus on ways of helping to combat climate change and to inspire everyone to go a little greener.

South Derbyshire District Council, East Staffordshire Borough Council and North West Leicestershire District Council have teamed up with their partners, including the National Forest Company and the South Derbyshire Partnership, to promote Climate Week and opportunities to learn more about the environmental, health and financial benefits of looking after the planet.

All year round ....

  • You can find out more at environmental, health and leisure events throughout the year, not just in Climate Week. For example, if you are interested in sourcing local food, there is a Farmer’s Market in Ashby on the 3rd Saturday of the month – contact North West Leicestershire District Council for more information. There are lots of Farm Shops in the local area too – details are on the National Forest Company website.

See the Events calendar for activities and events in South Derbyshire each month.

  • You can also contact the Waste and Cleansing team at SDDC for more information on recycling in our District.

  • Why not join the National OPAL Explore Nature surveys to assist scientists in learning more about our environment and how it is changing. Their simple surveys are fun to do and suitable for all ages. To find out more look at www.opalexplorenature.org/

The Climate Week dates for 2012 are Monday 12th – Sunday 18th March 2012

This is your opportunity to hold fun and exciting activities - and help the environment in the process - so ask an organisation or group you know, such as your workplace or local school, to run an event.

There are many potential ways of getting involved:

  • Businesses and schools can push themselves to monitor and reduce energy consumption, or to promote car sharing. Alternatively, they can carry out an environmental project in their community or try out a wide range of challenges on the Climate Week website.

  • Community groups could run low carbon coffee mornings, carry out an environmental project, or arrange fundraising for local environmental projects.

  • You can work out how you can save money and save resources, and contribute to global climate action.

Round up of Climate Week 2011 successes:

North West Leicestershire District Council, East Staffs Borough Council and South Derbyshire District Council worked together on joint programmes and promotion.

Our aims during the week were to:

  • Increase awareness of climate change issues, and how people can ‘make a difference’ locally.

  • Demonstrate links between actions to reduce carbon emissions whilst also saving money and improving health.

  • Pool resources, and do more with less!

In South Derbyshire

  • 12 organisations put on 16 events, including the ‘Fantastic Homes’ Roadshow and 2 Waste Education ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ roadshows and Feed-in Tariff information displays. Organised walks, runs, treeplanting events and 2 pedomter loan events also took place.

  • There were 979 participants at the events, plus 120 school children planting trees and learning about woodlands for a full day.

  • Press coverage included 3 radio interviews and a total of over 3 pages in local papers.

Final event:

  • 2 Electric Bike showcase events were organised jointly by the 3 authorities in Swadlincote and at Rosliston.

  • An Electric Bike Relay took place from Burton to Coalville and back, with staff demonstrating how easy cycling can be… when you have some back up from a battery!
