Pest control

We provide a pest control service, both domestic and commercial, for rats, mice and most insects of public health significance. Some treatments are free for domestic customers. We also enforce legislation relating to infestations on land or in premises.

Due to staffing issues we are currently unable to provide treatments for fleas. Apologies for this inconvenience.

What pests do the council treat for?

The South Derbyshire Pest Control Team will treat most of the every day pests found both within domestic and commercial buildings, which include the following:

  • Rats
  • Mice
  • Wasps
  • Bees (only if creating a danger to householder)
  • Bedbugs
  • Cockroaches

Note: Unfortunately we do not undertake treatments for ants, although we do have advice leaflets on how to try and control them within your property. Please contact the general enquiry number for advice or a copy of the leaflet or find more information on our ants page.

How much do treatments cost?

Please see the 'Fees and Charges' document under 'Related attachments' near the foot of this page.

The charges relate only to treatments carried out within working hours. There is no routine out of hours service undertaken by pest control, however, in exceptional circumstances, and when an officer is available, treatments may be carried out. Any treatments done outside normal hours carry a higher than normal charge.

(Note: Contracts for the regular monitoring and baiting of commercial premises are also available. For advice please contact the Pest Control Team.)

Who qualifies for the reduced rate in the 'low income' group?

In order to qualify for a reduction in the charges specified above you would have to be receiving of one of the following benefits:

  • Income support
  • Housing benefit
  • Council tax benefit
  • Job Seekers Allowance
  • State retirement pension
  • Widow's pension
  • Unemployment benefit or
  • Registered disabled.

How do I request a treatment?

For any general enquiries or to request an officer to undertake a treatment the please contact Tel: 01283 595795.

When will an officer come out?

In most cases the officers will try to respond within three working days of receiving your call. You will be informed when you contact the above number when you can expect them to call. Unfortunately it is not possible to give exact times so it will normally be am or pm.

How will I pay?

Payment can be made at the time of booking using either a debit or credit card. Alternatively you can pay the pest control officer in cash or by cheque at the time the treatment is carried out.

If you qualify for a reduced payment then please ensure you have documentary evidence to show the officer when they call, for example a pension or benefit book.

What if I need general advice?

If you would like to speak to a pest control officer then please ring the general enquiry number Tel: 01283 595795. The officers are normally available up until 9am before they go out on visits and will endeavour to get back to you as soon as they are able to.
