The Pollution Prevention and Control Act 1999 and Pollution Prevention and Control Regulations (PPC) 2000 are already in force and will gradually replace similar existing laws (Environmental Protection Act 1990).
Our role is to provide a permit to control certain processes and set emission standards or pollution levels. We will be inspecting these processes routinely and more often where we suspect problems may be happening. if you breach the conditions we set, we can take enforcement action which can lead to prosecution.
The Environmental Agency control A1 processes, which concern more polluting and complex industries, eg power stations. Enquiries about A1 processes should be made to the Environment Agency, telephone number 01709 312800.
We undertake inspection and regulation of premises where part A2 processes, which have the potential to cause air pollution. These include activities such as vehicle re-spraying, furniture manufacture and unloading of petrol.
Processes that emit just to air are called Part B processes, also known as Local Authority Pollution Prevention and Control (LAPPC). For examples a waste oil burner. Please contact us with enquiries about Part A2 and Part B processes.
Anyone operating a process that falls into the A2 or B categories described above must submit an application, with a fee, to us. We must then issue an authorisation in accordance with government guidance.
If you wish to build a new installation, or substantially change an existing one, before that date you will need a permit before you operate.
