Cleaning up fly tipped rubish
Fly tipping is illegal, dirty and expensive - help stop it.  Use the report form at the bottom of this page or freephone 0800 5872349

What is fly-tipping?

Fly-tipping is when rubbish is dumped, often left at the side of roads and in lay-bys. We are obliged to clear up any rubbish dumped on public land.  Any kinds of rubbish may be dumped – sometimes it is household rubbish in black bags, sometimes tyres, tree cuttings or industrial rubbish.

Why is it a problem?

No one wants to see lots of rubbish.

  • It looks really ugly and makes the area look neglected.
  • Some types of rubbish can attract vermin.
  • Some types of rubbish can cause pollution of local land and streams.
  • It is expensive to clear up.
  • It means that we have to spend money cleaning up rubbish, which could be spent on other things.
  • Unscrupulous businesses are charging people money to clear up their rubbish and then dumping it. People can be paying twice to clean up their rubbish.

What can I do?

  • Take responsibility for your rubbish and make sure it is dealt with properly. In an effort to reduce the number of fly-tipping incidences we provide a special refuse collection for large items

  • Report any fly-tipping you see using the form below, use our FREE hotline number 0800 587 2349 or use our special CleanTeam email address waste.cleansing@south-derbys.gov.uk

  • Don't employ people to take away rubbish unless you are sure they are legitimate businesses. All proper businesses collecting waste should have a Waste Carriers Licence. To see if a waste carrier is licensed, you can either phone 0708 506 506 or check online at public register page of the Environment Agency's website

  • Let people know you don't want to be paying for their rubbish. Encourage them to do the right thing.

What should we do with our rubbish?

Wherever possible you should try to recycle your rubbish – you can use:

  • Recycling banks near supermarkets and car parks (Find your nearest recycling centre using this website or call us on 01283 595758)
  • Blue bag paper collections from your home
  • Brown wheeled bins for compost collections
  • Try to cut down on the amount of rubbish you produce - call Customer Services for advice and a free bookmark on 01283 595758.
  • Put it in your wheeled bin for collection.
  • Phone us on 01283 595758 to order a bulky collection (charges apply).
  • Take your rubbish to the Household Waste Recycling Centre (or 'tip') to get rid of it free of charge (there are restrictions on what they can accept – call 0845 6058058 for details). Opening hours are 8.30am to 6pm every day.
  • Hire a skip – look in your yellow pages for companies.
  • Take your rubbish to a waste disposal company.
