Bags, bins and boxes

We collect recyclables from 98 per cent of households in South Derbyshire.

We operate a kerbside collection service that collects paper, foil, glass bottles and jars, tins and cans, and textiles.

Paper Recycling Scheme – ‘Blue Bag’

What you can put in your blue paper recycling bag:

  • newspaper
  • magazines
  • junk mail
  • telephone directories
  • brochures
  • catalogues
  • letters and general paper (remove personal details to prevent identity fraud)

What you cannot put in your blue paper recycling bag:

  • envelopes
  • cardboard
  • plastic wrappers
  • general household rubbish

Multi-Material Recycling – ‘Green Box’

What you can put in your green recycling box:

  • Clean food tins
  • Clean drinks cans
  • Clean glass bottles
  • Clean glass jars
  • Clean foil
  • New - aerosols.
    • Leave aerosols mixed in with other metal waste - do not segregate and concentrate them.
    • Please remove loose plastic parts such as over-caps/lids.
    • Leave only EMPTY used aerosols.

What you cannot put in your green recycling box:

  • Plastics
  • Cardboard
  • Paper
  • Textiles
  • General rubbish

Textile Recycling – ‘White Bag’

What you can put in your white textile recycling bag:

  • clothing
  • swimwear
  • paired shoes
  • sheets
  • curtains
  • towels
  • hats
  • belts
  • handbags and luggage

What you cannot put in your white textile recycling bag:

  • soiled or wet clothing
  • general rubbish

Brown bin composting scheme 

We collect kitchen waste and garden waste from households in South Derbyshire and take it to special In Vessel Composting (IVC) facilities in Ashbourne and Etwall. The waste is composted in sealed units under temperature-controlled conditions, which allow meat and fish waste to compost down before it is transferred outside to open windrows (compost heaps).

You may compost the following types of waste in your brown bin:

  • Food Leftovers
  • Vegetable Peelings
  • Meat and Fish
  • Fruit and Salad
  • Stale Bread
  • Tea Bags and Coffee Grounds
  • Grass Cuttings
  • Weeds and Leaves
  • Flowers / Plants  
  • Pet Straw / Sawdust
  • Flowers and Plants

We cannot accept the following types of waste in your brown bin:
