There are various minor adaptations that can be fitted to help you around your home. In the past, you needed a detailed assessment by Social Services for all minor adaptations before work could be carried out. We now operate a 'Fast track' minor adaptations scheme for 3 of the most commonly requested adaptations.
You can request the following minor adaptations directly from us:
If you have difficulty getting into your home, you may require a grab rail positioned by the door to help. We can also fit grab rails in the bathroom to help you to use the bath safely, or to get up and down when using the toilet.
If you are having difficulty climbing the stairs, we can fit a second stair rail on the opposite side to provide extra support and make it much safer going up and down the stairs.
If you are having difficulty turning your taps on or off in your kitchen or bathroom, we can fit lever taps to make them easier to use.
If you are experiencing any of the difficulties described above and you feel that any of these adaptations will help, you can contact the Council on 01283 595795 and make a request for any of the 3 adaptations you need. You will be asked to provide details of your name and address and to describe which adaptation you want and why you need it. Once your request has been processed, the work is usually carried out within the next 3-4 weeks.
There are, of course, many other improvements and adaptations that can be done to your home to help you to continue to live there independently. To request help with any other adaptations you will need to contact Social Services on 01283 230400 for a more detailed assessment of your needs.
They will advise what adaptations are appropriate to meet your needs or the needs of a disabled person who lives in your home and send their recommendations to the Council. If they agree that you need major adaptations to your home, you will be referred to the Council for a Disabled Facilities Grant.
