Housing Associations and Registered Social Landlords (RSLs)

Registered Social Landlords are landlords who provide accommodation for rent and sale. The way they operate is governed by the Tenant Services Authority, which also oversees the activity of other social landlords such as local authorities. Housing Associations are Registered Social Landlords.

What sort of accommodation do they provide?

Most landlords have rented accommodation. This may take the form of self-contained houses, flats and bungalows. Alternatively it may be shared accommodation such as in a hostel. Some associations also provide homes for sale through low cost home ownership and shared ownership (part sale/part rent) schemes.

What do I have to do if I want this type of accommodation?

We now operate a common housing register in South Derbyshire. This means that you only have to register your housing application in one place (here at the Council) to get access to all vacant social housing in the district. For more information on this go to Applying for housing

Once registered you can express your interest in homes with other landlords by bidding using the Choice Based Lettings System. This means that if you place top at the end of the bidding process and you meet the general lettings policy of the landlord, we can nominate you to the Registered Social Landlord to be re-housed. However, we cannot force the landlord into accepting a nomination as they have the final say on who they let their properties to.

Will I have to wait a long time for registered social landlord accommodation?

It all depends on how many become available. This sector of housing only represents a small amount of the rented sector.

Some smaller landlords, such as Almshouses in rural villages don't have a waiting list but ask the Council or other organisations to nominate someone when one of their properties becomes vacant.
