There will be a photocall at Rosliston Forestry Centre at 10.30am on Tuesday 29 July, 2008 where the Walking with Wheels, the parent and pushchair group, will be voting on laptops with Debbie Chesterman of Get Active in The Forest for the national final of the National Lottery Awards
The Get Active in The Forest scheme, based at Rosliston Forestry Centre in South Derbyshire, has made it to the national final of the National Lottery Awards.
The scheme has fought off competition from other sports projects in the country which have received Lottery funding to make it to the vote-off between the final three.
On Tuesday 29 July, 2008 Debbie Chesterman of Get Active in The Forest will be asking the twenty parents who take part in the weekly Walking with Wheels scheme to vote for Get Active.
People in Derbyshire, Staffordshire and Leicestershire are also being asked to vote for Get Active in The Forest. Voting closes at 12 noon on Friday 8 August. There will be a special Lottery Awards show on BBC1 on Saturday 30 August where people from Get Active in The Forest will be in the audience to hear the results broadcast live.
Walking with Wheels is one of the many easy ways to enjoy getting exercise which has been created through Get Active in The Forest.
Allison Gordon set the Walking with Wheels group up in May 2007. She is a trained walk leader and worked as a personal trainer and sports therapist before having a baby.
Says Allison, “After I had my daughter I often felt stuck in the house and it was driving me crazy. Through Get Active in The Forest I started the group. It’s there for mums, dads, grandparents, carers - anybody with a child in a buggy. All you need to do is turn up at Rosliston Forestry Centre on Tuesdays at 10.30am.
“We walk out in all weathers and you can bring your other kids along during the school holidays. We do a few exercises as we walk. It’s great to be in the fresh air. It stops parents feeling isolated at home as you can chat to other people about your kids.”
Get Active in The Forest has also created the innovative Castle Gresley Pub Walks which can be found on beermats at the White Lion In, the Drum and Monkey and the Mount Pleasant public house.
Says Debbie Chesterman of Get Active in The Forest, “We have walks from surgeries, walks at Willington Marina, walks from the Hilton Brook pub as well as cycling, archery, tai chi, orienteering and even woodland laser combat. It’s all about taking exercise, enjoying the outdoors and having fun.
“We are proud to have fought off so much competition and we would like to ask people to vote for us.
