Please use your library to vote

Even if you don’t have a computer, you can still vote online for two Derbyshire projects which will benefit local people which are in line for a National Lottery Award.

Get Active in The Forest, based at Rosliston in South Derbyshire, needs your vote to become the best Lottery funded sports project in Britain and the Moors for the Future project in Edale is in the running to become the Best Environment Project.

Staff at all Derbyshire County Council’s libraries are on hand to help people vote for the Derbyshire projects to win.

Says Councillor Bob Janes, cabinet member for cultural services, “We have computers in all our libraries with free access to the internet. Even if you’ve never used a computer before, our staff will show you just how easy it is to get on line. And while you’re at the library why not see what else we have to offer with access to thousands of books as well as CDs, DVDs and computer games?”

You can vote for both projects for their separate awards and you can vote more than once for both of them.

There will be a special Lottery Awards show on BBC1 on Saturday 30 August where people from Get Active in The Forest and Moors for the Future will be in the audience to hear the results broadcast live.

Says Debbie Chesterman of Get Active in The Forest, “We are putting Derbyshire and The National Forest on the map. Get Active in The Forest is a fun way to get fit. We have activities which range from archery, climbing walls and sumo wrestling for more energetic people to the more placid tai chi. We have local walks from pubs and surgeries. We’ll do everything we can to help people get healthy. If we win the National Lottery Award, people in other areas of Britain might decide to use our ideas to help the rest of Britain get better.”

Moors for the Future is working in the Peak District National Park to restore peatlands which are one of Britain’s largest natural weapons against global warming.

Says Chris Dean, Moors for the Future Manager, "A vote for us recognises the importance of the moorlands in the UK’s past and future. The peatlands store more CO2 than all the forests in the Britain and France combined. But we are not only restoring the vegetation on the moor, we are also working on footpaths to make area more attractive for visitors. We really hope people will vote for the future benefit of the whole country.”

All you need to do is to go to www.lotterygoodcauses.org.uk/awards or you can vote by phone 0845 386 3453. Phone calls from a BT landline at the BT lo-call landline rate cost less than 5p
