Following government rules

South Derbyshire District Council has started planning for future housing in the District by issuing a ‘call for sites’ to landowners under government rules for establishing a Local Development Framework.

Says Ian Bowen, South Derbyshire District Council’s Planning Policy Manager, “The government requires the Council to invite landowners to submit details of sites that they would like to make available for housing development up to 2026. Under government plans, the District will need to find land to build around 600 new homes each year to 2026.

“Landowners will be coming forward with their proposals for housing development but the ‘call for sites’ does not mean that all sites brought to our attention, or even most of them, will ever be built. We are adamant that the sites that are selected by the Council for development in South Derbyshire will be those that benefit local people the most and cause least disruption to residents, businesses and the environment. This could mean using development to bring neglected land back into use or to provide new public transport and open space.”

Anyone can submit details of potential housing land, if they provide full details including a map showing the location and boundaries of the site. The ‘call for sites’ will remain open until 12 September 2008. A form can be found on the Council’s website at www.south-derbys.gov.uk/SHLAA or by telephoning the Council on 01283 595749.

Ian Bowen concludes, “We know we will need to find new land for housing to meet the Government’s plans. Local residents can be assured that where development is to happen, it should be on the most sustainable sites and provide positive benefits to the local area. This government process will allow the public and the Council to compare all options and make informed choices.”
