Taste of support at breakfast event

news release November 17, 2008

The current economic downturn has prompted Business Link East Midlands and South Derbyshire District Council to stage a series of sector-specific events designed to raise awareness of support available to businesses.

Tuesday (November 18) sees one aimed at farmers, estate owners, small-holders and other land-based businesses, such as those involved in agriculture, horticulture and forestry.

The breakfast meeting will provide an opportunity for guests to hear several short presentations, including one by George Cook of Business Link on the new grants available from the Rural Development Programme for England, a major new initiative to assist farmers and landowners increase their income.

Other speakers at the event, being staged at Sharpe's Pottery Museum in Swadlincote, will discuss current issues in the industry and provide case studies of farm diversification.

South Derbyshire District Council had been discussing the business breakfasts idea with Business Link and says the credit crunch was the prompt to press ahead with the idea. The events are targeted at sectors that are significant to the district's economy.

The format is a series of short presentations, including a chance to question those who speak. There will also be a small number of displays to view before and after the presentations.

Leader of South Derbyshire District Council Heather Wheeler who will welcome guests to the event says: "We recognise that businesses are facing difficult times and are also aware that over the last few years the number of grant schemes, advice services and other support available has mushroomed.

"We are keen to do whatever we can to help businesses in these tough times and believe that ensuring they are fully aware of support available is one of the ways in which we can do this."

Further business breakfast events are planned for the New Year.
