Press release 28 March 2008
With so much news in the media about elections, people in South Derbyshire are telephoning the Elections Office to find out if there is an election in the District this year.
Says Frank McArdle, South Derbyshire's Returning Officer & Electoral Registration Officer, "It's very reassuring that people in South Derbyshire are so keen to vote but there are no elections scheduled in the District this year.
"The Members of South Derbyshire District Council stand for election every four years and as elections were held last year, the next District and Parish Council elections will take place in May 2011. There will be Derbyshire County Council and European elections next year and, of course, a general election could be called at any time.
"We do actively encourage people to register throughout the year. When people move to a new home in the District they are sent a letter and application form inviting them to register. They can also request a postal vote at the same time rather than waiting for an election to be held."
If you would like to register to vote, please visit www.south-derbys.gov.uk/elections or call the Elections Office on 01283 595723
