Landscape Character Assessment for Derbyshire

Landscape Character Assessment (LCA) is a tool to identify what makes a place unique, The purpose of a LCA is to provide a framework for decision making that respects local distinctiveness. 

Derbyshire County published a Landscape Character Assessment of Derbyshire in 2003.  An abridged or ‘clipped’ version of this document is available to view below, although this version only includes information relevant to South Derbyshire District.  The full document can be viewed on the County Council’s web site:

In addition to the Landscape Character Assessment published by the County Council the National Forest Company have also prepared a LCA to help guide the creation of the National Forest.  Initially prepared in 1994, this assessment was updated in 2004 and can be viewed in the National Forest Strategy 2004-2014 and includes the assessment in the Landscape chapter:

In addition to the above data the County Council is also preparing an Historic Landscape Character Assessment of the District and is currently undertaking work on tranquillity within Derbyshire.  Information setting out the methodology and results of this assessment work will be added to this page once available.
