Ready, steady, flip - the pancake races countdown is on
2 February 2017
The obstacles have been carefully planned and the golden frying pan dusted down, which can mean only one thing - it’s pancake time.
The much-anticipated Swadlincote Pancake Races 2017 will take place on Shrove Tuesday 28 February 2017, on The Delph market square.
Teams of four are being urged to sign up to compete at an event which has become one of the most popular on the local calendar - these can be from businesses, organisations, schools or simply groups of friends, with the £4 per team entry fee going straight to Comic Relief.
This year’s races begin at noon, 45 minutes after pupils from Swadlincote’s Belmont Primary School try out this year’s obstacle-laden course.
The battle will see flipping daredevils do their best to win the title and therefore wrestle the coveted golden frying pan from the tight grip of Sainsbury’s Local Glamorgan Way, which has held the trophy for the past three years.
Extra entertainment will be provided in the form of mascot races, with sports teams, business and other organisations all represented, while all participants can choose to wear fancy dress or corporate attire.
Cllr Bob Wheeler, Leader of event organiser South Derbyshire District Council, said: “The Swadlincote Pancake Races barely need introduction. Not only are they a fantastic community occasion, but they also provide a great platform for local businesses to promote themselves.
“The event really helps to bring the town centre alive and if you’ve never experienced it before then be sure to make this the year.
“It’s all a bit of fun for a great cause but, with medals and trophies on offer, you can be sure that there’ll be a serious side to proceedings too.”
